The karat hallmark is important to the value of your gold jewelry. Without it you could have yellow colored tin or lead. The hallmark will signify a percentage content of the alloy, 18K is 75% gold; 12K is 50% gold; 14K is 58.5% gold; and 10K is 41.7% gold. In the United States less than 10K is not even considered to be "gold". So karat is a gauge of purity of the alloy you are buying, which is what part of its value is based on.
